Heavenscrapers - Tryton Business House, Gdańsk

The exhibition Heavenscrapers presents paintings from a series of works of the same title, which depict the façades of skyscrapers — some of them are real buildings, whilst at other times they are fantastical structures, portrayed in such a way as to emphasise what seems to be the very essence of a skyscraper: its height and glazing.
The architecture of skyscrapers serves as a pretext for reflections on the role of work in human life. Although it is often accompanied by hardship and the need to subordinate oneself, on the other hand, beyond its basic function of providing a livelihood, it opens up opportunities, allows for self-fulfilment and sets the rhythm of everyday life. This ambivalence allows for the introduction of reflections on work into the realm of art. What is interesting is not only what restricts us within these imposed structures, but also what draws us to them.
The skyscrapers depicted in the paintings are treated as an architectural sign of how we perceive time today; they become a symbol of faith in endless growth, progress and the need for constant development, which, however, leaves no room for a moment’s respite. Hence, they are referred to as ‘heavenscrapers’ to emphasise the connection of this word not with a sky but heavens and their religious, methaphisical aspects.
The unconventional venue for the exhibition – the office space of the Tryton Business House – has the potential to provide the paintings with additional context, whilst also enabling the art to be presented to those who may not have time to visit a gallery on a daily basis.
